New Reef Discovered!
The first standalone reef discovered in 120 years was found off the north coast of Australia. Unlike the nearby Great Barrier Reef which has suffered coral bleaching events, this new reef is healthy and thriving.
This reef towers above seafloor like a skyscraper and rises from depths of 500 meters up to 40 meters. There are similar reefs nearby on nautical charts created in the late 1800s, but this one remained undiscovered until now.
The reef is believed to be millions of years old.
