Green Sea Turtle downgraded to Least Concern
After being listed as endangered in the 1980s the green sea turtle has recently been downgraded to "Least Concern". This is a major conservation win after decades of global efforts. From protecting eggs and nesting areas, to hatching in labs and restricting harvesting has all benefited in rebounding the green sea turtle populations.
If you have spent any time near sea turtle habitat, you may have witnessed some of these efforts. I have personally seen roped off sea turtle nests on beaches near Cancun. Response teams in action on Maui to untangle turtles from fishing gear. Along with signs and warnings in many locations to stay a certain distance away from sea turtles.
If you want to see some green sea turtles, I recommend Maui. In all the places I have snorkeled, I saw the most sea turtles there. Check our recommendations on places to snorkel on Maui.
